One of the programs Maureen’s Readers has continued to support is the food “Backpack Program” at Park Elementary in Le Sueur where Maureen Wavrin taught for 23 years. The Rotary Club of Le Sueur provides food packs for students in need each Friday to be consumed over the weekend. We thought it would be nice to put books into these packs. This fits perfectly into our mission of helping students build home libraries.
Sherri McCoy, one of the teachers we work with at Park, sent us this email: “I wanted to tell you about a boy from my room who receives the food bags. He got to his locker Friday morning and saw his food bag which is normally there, and put it in his backpack. When he was zipping up his backpack he came running over to me to tell me that this time he got an “I Survived” book in his bag and he could hardly wait to get home and read it!! (We have been reading them in class for our read alouds and they love them.) So I wanted you to know Maureen’s Readers really are making a difference!!”
We just purchased another 250 books for the program today.
